DescriptionA vintage love seat with a large canvas resting on the back of the sofa. The canvas features abstract forms on a white ground in red, orange, blue, and pink paint, which continue onto the love seat. On the back of the left side of the sofa is a heart rendered in multicolored stripes and black.Label TextCombining painting and sculpture, Sarah Cain employs a vintage love seat sofa and a traditional canvas as a single support. Cain’s abstract forms respond to the history of modernist painting and its masculine associations. The gestural drips, pours, and splashes reference mid-century Abstract Expressionist action painters and the hard-edge, flat forms recall those found in Minimalist geometric abstraction. Cain’s use of materials commonly considered decorative or “feminine”—such as domestic furniture, beads, and gold leaf—mixes with her bold application of paint to challenge conventional notions of painting and gender.
