DescriptionA white-slipped, hollow, mold-made rattle that depicts a standing figure wearing traditional female costume and ornaments. This includes an elaborate headdress, prominent jewelry, and a richly decorated skirt and pectoral garment.Label TextThis mold-made figure provides an excellent example of Classic Maya clothing. The specific pieces worn likely communicated community affiliation, as well as status within society. The apparel and adornments show on this figure are a blend of Classic Maya and Highland Mexican motifs, which offers insight into cultural contacts and influences across the Maya region (Bernadette Cap, 2021)Provenancewith Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kayton, San Antonio, TX, before 1964; by gift to the San Antonio Museum of Art, 1964.Not on view
