DescriptionColumnar sculpture comprised of four large pieces of wood. The exterior of the sculpture displays the interior wood grain, while the exterior bark of each piece of wood faces the inside of the formation.Label TextVirginia Overton’s creative inspiration comes from the scrapyard, the warehouse, and the wider world of refuse and rust. Through trial and error, she makes a minimal sculpture like Untitled (Quartered Pine) performative. It obstructs, bisects, divides, and joins the architecture of the gallery space. Overton does not think of herself as an artist working with readymade objects in the way Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887–1968) took a bottle rack, for example, turned it upside down and presented it as an artwork. Instead, Overton explains, “I do stuff to them, even if it’s the relationship of one found object to another.” When confronted with an item that still has creative potential, she often asks herself, ”Why would somebody throw that away? There’s still so much you can do with that.”
