DescriptionThis bottle has an elegant silhouette: a bulbous belly, long and narrow neck and a flaring mouth, all together evoking the shape of a pear. This bottle could come from a set of vessels intended for Buddhist ritual use. This bronze bottle could be modeled after those more commonly found ceramic bottles of the same shape that are for storing wine. The bottle has thin walls and was made in four sections, which were brazed together. This bottle could have had a polished sheen when new, before the green patina was developed. This vessel might be included in a tomb as an object that could be continuously treasured by the deceased in the afterlife.Provenancesold by Kochukyo Co. Ltd to the anonymous collector, 1967; anonymous collector, by gift to San Antonio Museum of Art, 2021
