DescriptionA Neolithic Chinese large jar of globular form with short neck and everted rim, set low on the equator with a lug handle to each side, and with flat base; pottery, decorated in black and red pigments above the handles with four sets of concentric circles each with a central roundel comprising three cross-hatched circles, the mouth with a line pattern at the rim above a thick band of red bordered by a double band of conjoined "U"-shapes in black, the exterior of the mouth with strongly painted chevrons. Machang type, from Gansu or Qinghai province.Label TextThe lively painted decoration on the upper portion of this large jar was applied with animal hair brushes. The sandy red clay was low-fired at between 800 to 1,000 degrees centigrade. Such jars are often found in burials and were used for holding grain such as fox tail millet, a staple food in the Miaodigou culture of central and northwestern China.ProvenanceGift of S.
