DescriptionA 2.5 foot-high burnished ceramic jar covered with floral designs. The flowers themselves are white, but the artist has painted the background with blue, red, yellow, and green.Label TextThis work is unique among early twentieth-century Tonalá ceramics not only for its monumental scale, but also for its bright color, possibly achieved using a fine white clay known as matiz. The decoration on this vessel also possesses a unique palette for Tonalá earthenware. The artist depicted the leaves and flowers in white, while painting the space between in reds, blues, greens, and yellows. The traditional “flor de Tonalá” design, characterized by flowers with layered, scalloped petals, appears throughout the vessel.
