DescriptionA large storage jar; the sides rise from a narrow foot to a broad, rounded shoulder set with a short neck below the wide flattened mouth with rounded rim; stoneware, incised and combined on the body with a wide band of flowering peony branches above a band of simply drawn lapped leaves and below a narrower band of florettes and leaves; the background of the peony scroll washed with an iron laden glaze under a clear glaze covering the entire piece.Label TextThis massive jar was made at the Gangwa kilns near Chifeng, in present day Inner Mongolia. The carving of the peony flower decoration employs the sgraffito technique, which reveals a layer of iron brown below the white glaze.
