DescriptionPorcelaneous stoneware with an incised design under celadon glaze. Chekiang Celadon Mei P'ing--Ming Dynasty. Shouldered ovoid body carved with a diaper design surmounted by a short neck with unglazed rim, the splayed foot with upright stiff leaves, supported on a pierced reticulated base, covered in a pale green glaze. The shouldered ovoid body is incised with a diaper pattern and ends in a short neck with an unglazed rim. The tapering lower part of the vase is decorated with long vertical leaves. The underside of the foot is pierced with a hole revealing the bottom of the vase and is unevenly glazed. Foot flares slightly outward and ends with an unglazed inward slanting plane the thickness of the clay body. Body is heavily pitted and covered with a thick green glaze. Body is white turning to a brownish orange close to the glaze. Over-all decoration shows the influence of the contemporary painted blue and white Ming vases. Shape and richness of the glaze would seem to indicate a date toward the middle of the Ming Dynasty.ProvenanceMr. Weldon SheffieldNot on view
